Madaari (2016) - By Nishikant Kamat
A social-thriller film, #Madaari is directed by Indian filmmaker Nishikant Kamat who previous projects include films like Rocky Handsome, Drishyam, and Mumbai Mera Jaan. A Vashu Bhagnani release, produced by Shailesh Singh, Madan Paliwal, Sutapa Sikdar and Shailja Kejriwal, Madaari stars Irrfan Khan, Jimmy Shergill, and Tushar Dalvi in the pivotal roles. The movie hit the theatres on Friday, 22 July 2016. Madaari was initially scheduled to release on 15 July 2016 but because the prints of Indra Kumar’s Great Grand Masti got leaked online, Madaari had to swap the release date with Great Grand Masti which postponed its release by a week.
Irrfan Khan in Nishikant Kamat's Madaari
Madaari presents the tale of a common man wronged by the system. Years later, the man does something that ends up shaking the very foundations of the corrupt system we all are a part of. While Madaari may remind some of modern classics like A Wednesday (2008) and Law Abiding Citizen (2009), it has an air of freshness that we seldom get to see in Bollywood films these days. The movie’s taut screenplay is enriched with elements of thrill and suspense that add to the plot’s ever brewing tension.
The USP of Madaari is Irrfan’s powerful acting performance. It wouldn’t be farfetched to describe Irrfan’s performance in Madaari as one of the best in his acting career. In fact, it is already being hailed as his best work by Bollywood biggies. Irrfan is well complemented by Jimmy Shergill. The duo has acted together in films like Haasil and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns but their chemistry in Madaari is just unparalleled. Nishikant Kamat needs to be congratulated for eliciting brilliant performances not only from his principal actors but from his entire cast. Kamat’s direction in Madaari is absolutely superb and ever surpasses the brilliance of Drishyam.
Overall, Madaari is a film that is both entertaining as well as thought-provoking. The movie, with its powerful socio-political commentary, succeeds in delivering a strong message across. The movie’s high entertainment quotient ensures that the family audiences have a nice time watching it. The movie has something for everyone. In a nutshell, Madaari is a film that can be enjoyed by all the sections of the audiences which makes it is a must watch.
