Trapped is a survival thriller directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Produced under the banner of Phantom Films, Trapped stars Rajkummar Rao in the lead role of a man who gets trapped in a deserted apartment in Mumbai with no hope of escape or survival. In this article, we will look at various factors that make Trapped a must-watch thriller.
For a film that's set in a room for the most part and doesn't feature much dialogue, acting becomes a major challenge. For a movie like this to work, it is important that the character manages to make the audience root for him/her at all times. It is here that Rajkummar Rao manages to hold his own. The film is about him from starting to end. There are no two ways about it. Trapped minus Rajkummar Rao's riveting performance wouldn't have been what it is.
There is tension from the word go. The moment the hero steps into that room we start anticipating what's to follow next. Sometimes we make the right guess. Often we are kept guessing until the very end.
The spirit of survival is what makes Trapped a highly accessible film. It is said that survival is the most basic human instinct and Trapped shows us why. Here is a man who has been cut off from the whole world in almost unfortunate and bizarre manner. He somehow manages to keep himself sane against all odds, thereby giving a great demonstration of the human ability to expand and endure when facing great adversities.
It is the writing that makes an engaging thriller in the vein of Hollywood films dealing with survival like Cast Away, Life of Pi, 127 Hours, etc. Full credit goes to Amit Joshi and Hardik Mehta for creating a film literally out of nothing. Trapped is a testament to the power of good screenwriting that often gets unnoticed.
Brilliant writing is never enough to make a brilliant movie. That's what separates cinema from literature. Direction almost always plays a critical role in the manner the screenplay gets materialized into the movie. The director is usually the ultimate creative authority. Vikramaditya Motwane, to his credit, is up to the task here in Trapped. In fact, his imaginative direction plays a pivotal role in making Trapped a riveting thriller.

Trapped is essentially the story of a hapless man who gets trapped in an isolated room of a deserted multi-storey building. His cell phone has also run out of the battery. There is no water. There is no electricity. And he has nowhere to go. Except to find a way to escape. When nothing works for him he is left with just one last hope--the indomitable spirit that refuses to give up until he has tried everything.
