Wonder Woman is the much awaited DC
Extended Universe film based on the popular superhero character Diana Prince,
essayed by the Israeli actress Gal Gadot. Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder
Woman costars Chris Pine, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Danny
Huston. The film presents the origins of the popular DC Comics character as the
young Amazon princess witnesses loss of innocence while growing up on island of
Themyscira, the home of the Amazonian warriors, ruled by her mother Queen
Hippolyta who forbids her sister Antiope from training the young Diana in the
Amazonian way, fearing that it may one day lead to Diana abandoning their home.
But Antiope is determined and so she
begins to train Diana secretly and thus begins the extraordinary journey of the
Amazonian Princess who would become the guardian angel of mankind, protecting
them from the constant perils of war as perpetrated by the Greek God of War, the
mighty but terrible son of Zeus, Ares.
Wonder Woman is not just a wonderful
tale of a female superhero but it is allegorically also a journey of a woman realizing
her true place and purpose in the world. For centuries women have been seen fit
to merely fulfill domestic responsibilities but finally the time has come when
women finally got the place they deserve in this world, a place of equality
wherein they are seen capable of doing everything that’s expected of men and
more. Hollywood for years has been a culprit of objectifying women and it is
for this reason a film like Wonder Woman has come just at the right time.
Today, the world has been more
vocal about woman equality than ever and so it is important that we have strong
women icons in every walk of life, cinema in particular, primarily because of
its impact and reach. When young girls would see a powerful woman defying all
odds, unleash her fury on bad guys twice her size, in a bid to protect mankind
on the silver screen they are bound to be inspired and a manner much similar to
how a Batman or a Superman inspires young boys.
Wonder Woman is the superhero we all
deserve. Having grown up watching the likes of Superman and Batman destroy the
bad guys we have developed rather rigid beliefs that only guys are capable of
getting physical and putting their bodies on the line to destroy evil. We all expect
girls to be delicate and fragile. This attitude has further intensified our patriarchal
mindsets. It is for this reason that the world needs to grow out of such dogmas
and openly embrace the idea of equality.
We all have, at one point or
other, witnessed the women in our lives demonstrating great power and resilience
in the face enormous odds. Wonder Woman is Hollywood’s testament to the spirit
of womanhood and though it took a long time coming it’s a most welcome change.
Hopefully, this is just a precursor of many more things to come.
According to the Greek Mythology,
Amazons were created to instill love in the hearts of man. “Women are the
bridge to greater understanding between all men,” says Diana. A lot has been
written about women been the nature’s greatest creation and it is not difficult
to imagine why. After all, no civilization can flourish without women nurturing
it. To quote the great American filmmaker Orson Welles, “If there hadn't been
women we'd still be squatting in a cave eating raw meat, because we made
civilization in order to impress our girlfriends. And yet nature can be
ferocious and destructive like hell. Wonder Woman is its perfect manifestation
of both the extremes.
Wonder Woman is arguably the most
popular DC Comics character to not get the kind of movie coverage that it
deserved. Finally, that’s no longer the case. Batman v Superman: Dawn of
Justice despite being a colossal failure had served as a great introduction for
the character of Wonder Woman. It served as a brilliant hook which set the
stage for a full-fledged movie about the enigmatic Diana Prince. Wonder Woman
would not only satisfy the comic-book fans but it would also serve as a great
initiation for those looking to get acquainted with the world’s most popular
female superhero.
In a nutshell, Wonder Woman is a
reminder of the changing times. That we no longer live in a world dominated by
men. That the modern women will no longer remain restricted to the households. That
they will do everything that has traditionally been associated with men. That they
will no longer allow men to dominate them in the various walks of life. That
the obsolete patriarchal societies would be replaced by modern societies formed
on the basis of equality between men and women.
