Tyrion Lannister, also known as The Imp, may not be the most powerful Lannister in the Game of Thrones pantheon but he certainly is the most enigmatic. Born a dwarf, Tyrion is detested by his father Tywin and sister Cersei right from the moment of his birth. Tywin looks down upon him as his greatest mistake and regards him as a stigma on his family’s legacy. Cersei blames him for killing their mother at the time of his birth. However, Cersei’s twin brother Jamie shares a harmonious relationship with their baby bother. Tyrion spends most of his time doing three things: drinking wine, bedding whores, and reading books.

Tyrion may only be a half man but he is certainly not half-witted. Time and again, he shows courage, astuteness and intellectual superiority—best demonstrated during the Battle of the Blackwater wherein his master strategy manages to keep Stannis Baratheon’s ginormous navy at bay long enough for the Tyrell-Lannister reinforcements to arrive and save the day for King Joffrey. Despite his outwardly display of arrogance and ruthlessness, Tyrion has quite a calm demeanor. He is magnanimous towards his friends and reasonable to his enemies.  He is also sympathetic towards the weak, the crippled, and the outcasts. The part of Tyrion Lannister is charmingly played by American actor Peter Dinklage who also won an Emmy and Golden Globe for Supporting Actor in 2011. Dinklage leads the principal caste of Game of Thrones from second season onwards.

When his father forcibly marries him to Sansa Stark, Tyrion respects her dignity and will by choosing not to consummate their marriage. Tyrion is accused by Cersei of poisoning King Joffrey on the day of his marriage. When his mistress Shae testifies against him during the trial, Tyrion loses his composure and launches a verbal assault on his family and its sycophantic followers. Sensing that the trail is just a sham with its outcome already pre-decided by his father, Tyrion demands for a trail by combat. Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne, who volunteers to be his champion, falls just short of slaying his opponent, Gregor Clegane aka "The Mountain," and Tyrion is awarded the death sentence. But, Tyrion escapes with the help of Jamie and Varys but not before exacting revenge on Shae and Tywin. With Tyrion having crossed the Narrow Sea, one just can’t help but wonder what role the gritty half man would play in the Game of Thrones saga come the Fifth Season.
