PIFF 2016 - Day 5

A Potpourri of Vestiges Feature

During the Press Conference of the Italian movie ‘The Plastic Cardboard Sonata’ held at Smita Patil Pavilion at City Pride, Kothrud during the 14th Pune International Film Festival, following points were discussed by film representatives. Enrico Falcone – Director & Producer, Piero Persello – Director & Producer along with Andrea Vasone – Lead Actor of the film were present on this occasion.

Film The Plastic Cardboard Sonata

- This film is a story of urban loneliness which has now became universal phenomena that people are dehumanizing themselves.

- The film features lyric suggestions in the context of paradoxical frame.

- By means of accurate use of silence, it sketches out the essence of daily life malaise.

- We wanted to show this monotony of the life which is seen in any suburb of any country.

- We searched locations that were dark, closed in a way claustrophobic as we wanted to show that emptiness in human life.

- Nowadays cities are growing, distances are increasing but humans are shrinking.

- People strive hard to get what they want but the irony is that, they are all alone by the time they have what they wanted. They fail to understand the real pleasures that they must seek.

- One must get out of his / her house and meet people, express himself, share his feelings in short connect to people to destroy this loneliness.

Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture

As per the tradition of PIFF, Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture was held today at City Pride Kothrud today. Renowned film personalities like Subhash Ghai, Jahnu Barua and Girish Kasarwalli discussed about ‘Ritwik Ghatak and his films’. The pointers of this lecture are as below

- Subhash Ghai mentioned that I was fortunate that I got to learn many things from RG since he was teaching us at FTII. He has great impact on me, my style of film making and my school of thinking.

- Every student of his has different interpretation of him but as far as I understood him, he was deeply affected by his past. He had not only seen India’s war of independence but had also witnessed the partition and was profoundly distressed by it.

- He had told me once that think through your hear and let the people with mind analyze it.

- He never made any movie to win an award, he made it to express himself and for his audience solely.

- Jahnu Barua said that RG did not have any particular style nor did he follow any style as such. He was lead by his own instincts. He was intensely connected to his past and had many reflections of it into his style of filmmaking.

- He wanted to express his agony, anger, suffocation and so his thought that film was the strongest medium to express his feelings and at the time it will also reach to larger audience. However he could not finish his expression as he died early.

- He was a fanatic humanist who never comprised anything for his cinema. He was an observer, artist, reactionary. Whatever he could create in his life span is only a small percentage of what he actually wanted to express through his films. His visuals are more of a human statement.

- Girish Kasarwalli mentioned that my understanding of RG comes through his films. However I feel that to understand RG, one must first understand what RG is not!

- He made films with a perspective of how world looked to him. He was truly disturbed by what happened to marginal people at that time. The optimism that he showcased in his films was hollow.

- Many called him melodramatic but that wasn’t his style, it was his expression and he used it to alter our perception.

- His films get very gloomy, depressing and shuttering towards the end but that is because he wanted us to come out of our comfort zone and feel the reality.

- His use of sound in the films was praised for his ingenuity. They were innovative and he used it only for illustrations.

- His film making techniques were outstanding. He made outstanding use of lensing had amazing effects, excellent use of wide angles. He also had a profound sense of multi layer construction of space.

- He also had a knack to stretch the time without hesitation. He used timing as a temporal structure in his films.

Making of Visual effects for Bahubali

A lecture was organized today at PIFF by Ujwal Nirgudkar – Chairman, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and Junaid – VFX Producer, Firefly Creative Studios. The duo illustrated how the visual effects were created for the film Bahubali.

- This movie gave us confidence that even though we can’t compete with Hollywood films when it comes to visual making we can make it; we can design it and create it.

- We had to plan very meticulously.

- Artists came from all around India.

- It was really hard initially to conceptualize it and design it accordingly. We started designing it in 2013 January and finished it by 2015.

- Too much detailing was required for every frame and it required lot of patience.

- It was mentally challenging job and we feared technical break through as technology is changing every day.

- The technology is now changing the course of film making. One must be up-to-date to keep up with these changes and stay strong in the market.
