Back in the 80s to 90s, the majority of Indonesian people were always eager to wait for their favorite Bollywood movies, which were aired in some television stations. They were also very enthusiastic in queue for hours to buy tickets, in order to watch their favorite Indian actors or actresses. Well, Indian movies or songs were very close to the heart of most Indonesians.

During the past five years, they have been ‘lucky’ enough to watch many kinds of Bollywood dramas or movies, without a single dime. They can either watch some dramas in national television stations or subscribing TV channels, airing India movies or dramas for 24 hours.

Indian dramas become the most favorite television shows lately In Indonesia, thanks to ANTV’s consistency in airing various kinds of dramas. So far, some of them are highly rated, especially dramas with interesting plot stories. It was started with the huge success of Mahabharata, in which ANTV has continued its effort in airing selective dramas like Chakravatin Shamrat Ashoka and Jodha Akbar. All of them were broadcast during prime time. Definitely, they had high ratings.

Then, ANTV tried to introduce the phenomenal “Uttaran”. Well, we know a lot of dramas with family and love life theme. “Uttaran” had a similar theme. But its intriguing plot had charmed its viewers, who didn’t want to miss every single episode. Even when “Uttaran” was aired for four consecutive hours, its rating was even higher than expected.

Now, ANTV is airing six Bollywood movies for approximately eight hours! As “Uttaran” has ended, ANTV has been trying to show several dramas with almost similar themes. But, among the most favorite dramas are “Thapki Pyar Ki” or known as Thapki, “Kumkum Bhagya” (Lonceng Cinta), and ”Yeh Hai Mohabbatein” (Mohabbatein).

“Thapki” was firstly aired on July 18th, 2016. The main story revolves about a stuttered girl, who finally reached her success, regardless of her flaws. Just expect to see her being abused by people around her, while she was fighting hard to prove that she wasn’t just an ordinary girl. You can also see her ups and downs love life, which commonly becomes the main theme of most Bollywood dramas.

Another drama with the similar theme is “Yeh Hai Mohabbatein”. Undoubtedly, it was the most wanted serials in India for three years now. Aired in 2013 in Star Plus, the serial is seemingly endless up to now. In the beginning of October 2016, “Yeh Hai Mohabbatein” has reached 400 episodes. The plot is actually very ‘ordinary’. The main roles are Raman and Ishita, who were married, got divorced and remarried, due to their love twists. It seems that the twists had increased viewers’ curiosity. Yet, the best thing about watching ‘Ye Hai Mohabbatein’ is its excellent performance from each actor and actress. Almost all of the main and supporting actors have been stunningly popular for decades.

But, it seems very surprising to see how “Kumkum Bhagya” becomes one of the most wanted serials, at this moment. The drama reveals the story about two sisters, who love and support each other during their good and bad times. It was stated that the drama was based on the popular novel by Jane Austen, titled “Sense and Sensibility”. But, actually, the real plot of “Kumkum Bhagya”—known as “Lonceng Cinta” still has lots of similarities with common Indian serials. Love twists, rivalry, hatred remain as the magnet for its loyal viewers.

Well, let’s wait which one of them will reach the highest television rating during prime time. You can also read the complete synopsis for each of the Bollywood series that was aired in Indonesia on this site: jadwaltelevisi.com.

  1. It's good to read about the Indian serials gaining audience outside the country.. It might feel like a lot of drama and culture cauldron for them..
