Loving (2016) - By Jeff Nichols |
Loving is a historical drama film written & directed by Jeff Nichols. Although it is inspired by the 1967 US Supreme Court landmark decision in Loving v. Virginia case which invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage, it depicts the life & journey of the couple fighting for their rights. It does not focus on the court room process instead it focuses on the human aspect and deals with the situation of the family. Loving is a story of a married interracial couple and the hardships they face because of racist society and denial of civil rights.
Loving is the story of discrimination, love, hope, sense of belonging and loss. It is a gripping movie which forces you to ask questions. Jeff Nichols has done a brilliant job here in showcasing human emotions and using them as a tool to tell the story. He has also continued his ever lasting partnership with Michael Shannon here as well. Shannon plays the character of Life magazine photographer; duration of his role is just few minutes but his character is important for the movie as it reveals a different shade of the Loving family.
Joel Edgerton has portrayed the character of Richard Loving with brilliance and he succeeds in presenting a character who is doubtful, confused, broken and afraid. Without speaking much dialogue Edgerton has given a strong performance which deserves to be applauded. Although he has created an Oscar buzz with his performance but I think he might just miss the nomination again. His performance during last 10 minutes of the movie is enough to make people believe that he is here to stay. He is a sure shot lock for Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor in Drama category and is also a strong contender for an Academy Award nomination.
The star of this movie is Ruth Negga who has given a powerful and beautiful performance. She has played the character of Mildred Loving who initially is scared and lost but later comes out as a strong force. There are two scenes in this movie where she is having a conversation over telephone with lawyer Bernie Cohen, both these scenes are strong enough to make her a frontrunner for this awards season. Her performance is already receiving accolades from all over. She has definitely locked her place for Best Actress nomination at the 2017 Oscars.
A Still from Jeff Nichols' Loving |
Loving was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Given its subject and the USA's long history of racism, Loving is already a strong contender for Best Picture nomination, especially keeping in mind the Academy's predilection for such themes. This is a movie which is worthy of your time and hopefully won't disappoint you.
