A Potpourri of Vestiges

Superstar 2010 and since then he has managed to carve a niche for himself. Some
of his most famous numbers include “Ishq Sufiyana” from Dirty Picture and “Jhooth Boliya” from Jolly LLB. Kamal has been equally successful
as a singer of Punjabi songs with songs like “Maula”.
Excerpts
Your
recent song “Chadra” is out and it is already creating buzz all around. Tell us
about the song and how did it happen?
My fans want me to try new
things. I keep getting requests to come up with something different. And it’s
not just limited to Hindi but also includes my Punjabi, Marathi and Gujrati
listeners. So “Chadra” is one such attempt to express my love and appreciation
for my fans.
You
shot to fame by winning Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar. Tell us about the experience
of winning such a big reality event and how it helped your career.
Yes, it was a great platform
for someone like me and it paved way for more things that kept coming my way
one after the other. I am really grateful to one and all.
You
have done both private albums as well as playback singing. How different are
these two? Which is more challenging according to you?
Well, both the challenging
in their own ways. I like doing both. Of course, playback is behind the curtain
and so you don’t really get to perform but it requires a different skill set
and so you have to be at the top of your game every time.
You
have sung many hit numbers. If we asked you to pick your favorite which one
would that be?
Well, all my songs are close
to my heart. Of course, “Ishq Sufiyana” is a favorite and then there is a
Sajjad Ali song “Sohni Lagdi” that I have also sung which is very close to my
heart. Then “Chadra” has become a
favorite of my fans and so it’s very special as well.
Tell us a little about your daily routine. How
do you keep yourself in a good singing form?
Firstly it is important to
have a solid base. Once you have that you can take off from there. Of course,
practice is very important and from time to time you have to fine tune yourself.
Live show performances can be a great way of practice as well.
Tell
us about your influences while growing up. Also tell us about the special bond
you share with Shah Rukh Khan.
There were so many influences
but if I have to name one singer then it would be Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The
legendary singer has sung almost everything that’s there to be sung. So
throughout my singing career he has been a great influence. Speaking of Shah
Rukh Khan, he is such a great personality. I performed in front of him on his 50th birthday.
He is so kind and generous and when you talk to him he makes you feel so
important. He is a self-made person and that’s I greatly admire that fact. As a
token of my love and appreciation, I come out with a new song on his every
birthday.
What
advice would you like to give to young singers who are trying to establish themselves
in the industry?
Well, I would like to tell them that you can achieve fame even while sticking to good lyrics and songs. There is absolutely no need to compromise on your standards. Also always remember that there is no shortcut to hard work and so keep trying and try hard.
